Emmaus, the Cause.

A person doesn’t simply become homeless. The process is often extremely complex involving issues such as relationship breakdown, poverty, addictions and unemployment. However, when it happens, when someone finally finds they are homeless, Emmaus are able to offer help with a whole range of emotional and practical challenges each person might face.

How do we help?

Over the years, we’ve learnt from our companions exactly how they feel and about the practical challenges they may need help with. Of course the list is not exhaustive, but neither is our desire to help. Below we highlight a number of areas we believe Emmaus helps the homeless.

  • Feeling isolated:  We offer a community providing warmth, friendship and support.

  • Afraid:  We offer safety and security.

  • Poverty stricken:  We offer a home, food, clothing and weekly spending money.

  • Bored:  We offer work for all abilities and interests.

  • Despair: We offer hope through self development and community support.

  • Helplessness: We will help people regain confidence through self esteem.

Our Founder

Abbe Pierre

Emmaus is pronounced
e-MAY-us.

The name was chosen by Emmaus' founder, Abbé Pierre as it symbolises hope. It comes from a story in St Luke's Gospel and, although Emmaus is not a religious organisation, Communities around the world have kept the name because of its symbolism.
