Why Companions?

Those who live in an Emmaus community are known as ‘Companions’, a term derived from the Latin word meaning to ‘share bread together’.

What happens when a homeless person joins the Emmaus community?

The first thing that happens is our new companion ceases to be homeless! They immediately have a home, here with us.

People initially come for 6 months. Our focus is to help them regain and develop their self esteem.

Some people train and earn NVQ’s, even a driving licence, but they all agree to undertake certain responsibilities for their community and sometimes ...they stay for years.

What Companions say about Emmaus.

  • “ Emmaus has given me back the feeling of wanting to do things with my life”

  • “ They help you sort your life out, give you back your self respect, your self esteem”

  • “ Emmaus has helped me look at myself, and it’s given me a purpose”

  • “ They try not to judge you, Emmaus is like that, very tolerant, very forgiving”

  • “ In Emmaus there is always someone to talk to. There is real support from the other Companions”

  • “ We are not homeless. We were homeless but we have now found a home. We work for our living.”
