With the opening of a new shop in Mount Florida Emmaus Glasgow has moved across the river into the south side of the city. Dumbarton Road in the West End remains our flagship, while Ellesmere Street is doing remarkably well and attracting business from the North. We made two brave efforts with short term leases in the East End which is undergoing major regeneration in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
Apart from widening our pool for donations the new shop is intended to be companion-led. This is a big challenge to add to collecting and delivering goods. We have had a full house of 24 companions for some time, so we need to find the kind of work experience that will stand them in good stead when they move on.
For our 2011 AGM we welcome the new Chief Executive of Emmaus UK, Arvinda Gohil. She comes with a wealth of experience in the voluntary sector and we look forward to being able to up our game as all 21 Emmaus Communities in the UK are visited by her. We are confident that we are in a good posi- tion to do well in the increasingly competitive second hand market.
